Join Scooby 3000 -- Support Scooby's Efforts in "Making Miracles Every Day"

Scooby Galgos

This is a special blog posting. I wanted all of you to know how Scooby's wonderful supporters have joined together to form a team of contributors, called Scooby 3000. Please read on to learn more about how you can help.

Scooby is Making Miracles Every Day
Fermin Perez and the Employees and Volunteers of Scooby Medina del Campo, Spain, the Galgo and animal rescue sanctuary, are making miracles and bringing joy to hearts each and every day.
A Tribute to Fermin Perez, Founder of Scooby

All of us who have adopted Scooby rescues as pets and/or volunteered with Scooby have a never-ending love for this organization and have become life-long voracious advocates and supporters. We believe in making a difference, and are committed to doing everything within our power to help Scooby save these beautiful animals who are in dire need.

Calling All Scooby Supporters - We Need Your Help!
Recently, the regional contract for Scooby to take in stray or abandoned dogs from the pounds was not renewed, which means the loss of 3000 € per month for operating costs. At the same time, the influx of dogs coming to Scooby's shelter still remains very high. The loss of these funds makes it very difficult to maintain the standards of care and to meet the operating costs at Scooby.

Here's How You Can Help - Scooby 3000
We want to recruit Scooby supporters who can commit to donating at least 5 € or $5 per month. These donations, along with our other fundraising efforts, can save Scooby and help to continue all of the great work that has been done over the past 25 years.

We are off to a good start with recruiting supporters, and would like to thank all of our current Scooby 3000 Members. You are truly making a difference!

We want YOU!
OK. If you think about it in practical terms, the cost of supporting Scooby 3000 each month compares to having two cups of coffee per month at your local shop, or purchasing a magazine or a few newspapers each month. Just a small regular monthly donation literally means life or death for our beloved Scooby animals. Not sure about you, but I certainly have a few spare dollars to donate to this worthy cause, and am a proud member of the Scooby 3000 Team.

Want to join Scooby 3000? Here's how...
We know how many passionate souls there are out there who support Scooby, so the time is now to act to save this important rescue organization while we can. Who wants to imagine a World without Scooby? :-( Not me!

Please join us! For your monthly donation of 5 € or $5 minimum or a yearly donation of 60 € or $60, you will receive a regular newsletter, and we will also organize special online events and give-aways for members only.
You can sign up by sending an e-mail with following information (see instructions below listed by country):
  • your first and last name
  • your country
  • whether you´d prefer to pay on a monthly or annual basis

Dear Polka, I loved you before I ever met you...

Fell in Love with this Galga at Scooby in April
Read here how the story unfolds!
When Darrell and I visited Scooby Medina del Campo in April 2012, I fell in love with a sweet, long-haired blonde galga in one of the paddocks that I cleaned.  Every time I turned around, or reached out to pet the beautiful galgos in this paddock, this little girl was first. She stood beside me and waited for a pet or a kind word.  I gave her lots of love, and she gave that love right back. My heart soared thinking about who would be lucky enough to adopt this lady. So gentle and kind, I knew she'd be the perfect pet.

All of the galgos at Scooby who are wearing blue collars, with the initials LSF, Lévriers sans Frontières, a French Galgo Rescue Association, will be going to France for adoption. It was bittersweet, wishing I could take this galga home, and knowing that she was destined for a wonderful life in France.  Once I left Scooby to return home to California,  I just couldn't stop thinking about her -- wondering where she went and who had adopted her. I wanted her to be happy, and hoped to find out more about her new life.

This is the Galga's Adoption Photo - I love her! |-)

I tried to wash her with a warm cloth,
but I just couldn't get all of the dried mud off of her lovely face.

It snowed and rained on this day in early April, so I put a nice warm coat on her.
She got along well with the others in the paddock, and she had a blue LSF collar,
so I knew she was going to France to be adopted.
There she was, along with all of the other lovelies,
coming to visit me when I sat down for a moment.
How could you not love this sweet, loving girl. She's truly someone special,
and I'm not the only one who noticed. :-) Read on for the Happy Ending!
I could not rest until I learned where my dear galga had gone. "Where for art thou sweet galga?" First, I posted on my own Facebook wall to see if any of my many Scooby peeps could advise regarding the galga's whereabouts.  No one knew.

Then I had an idea!  I am connected to Levriers Infos Adoptions Ingrid on Facebook, and maybe she or someone else connected to her would know where my galga went.  All of her postings are in French, and I don't speak or read French, so I decided to try Google Translate.  I entered my inquiry posting in English and it translated to French.  I then posted my French inquiry, along with a photo of my galga, asking if anyone knew of her whereabouts.  God bless the Internet!  :-) I found her adoption family within 24 hours.

Karine Le Goff- Tanguy and her family in Tourlaville, Basse-Normandie, France adopted her, and her name is --- ta da --- Polka!!!  Here is Karine's sweet story about how she loved Polka before she met her:

"It all started with a click on the internet. Here I am on the site "Sighthounds Without Borders", I read and reread all the articles, I look at the pictures of these martyrs galgos and I weep to see all this suffering and I am aware of the cruelty of which man is capable ! My decision is made, I will adhere to the association and try to help with my small means. I look every day of the new Pomeranians and I decide to click on pictures of dogs to adopt and there I came across the photo of Polka so sad, so beautiful and right away I knew it would, this little princess will be part of my family, I love her already without knowing her!! So I contacted the association to recognize the various stages of adoption and then everything starts up. I look forward to know if my application is accepted and finally the big day comes, I'll be able to adopt Polka. I am so happy! I'm still waiting for Polka must go in foster care for cats be tested because I have three but I confess that deep down I knew that everything going to be alright, it's made for me and for come live with us, our destiny was to cross. 1 week after I learned that everything goes well and so I decided to go get her. The meeting was wonderful, she is immediately came to me and cling to my leg, we just loved her. A week ago and she is part of our family and this is happiness!! She's a ray of sunshine, a precious stone and see épanoir, and plays with my children and my other dogs. She just filled me with joy!"

All Because One Person Cared... and Another... and Another...

Bless at Scooby, May 2011
I was thinking about it a couple of nights ago, and it occured to me that having our Scooby galga, Bless, is truly a miracle which would not have happened without the help of so many people who cared.  I don't know Bless' history, but I imagine that it's something like this...

Six years ago a beautiful brindle galga and a handsome strong galgo found each other in their paddocks, and decided to mate. Momma had a litter of very special galgos and galgas which she proudly presented to her galguero to champion in the hunting season.  Sadly, her puppies were lost in the perpetual breeding sea of galgos, bred to be "the best" hunter of the season.
Sweet, Sleepy Galgo Puppy
Some faltered and faced the sad ending that we don't like to think about, but there was one beautiful galga who made it through four hunting seasons.  Not really sure why... Maybe it was her beautiful Spanish eyes, her gorgeous brindle markings, or sweet disposition.  Whatever it was, whether that galguero gave up the galga or someone cared enough about her to rescue her, thankfully, she ended up at Scooby in Medina del Campo, Spain.

Once she arrived at Scooby, in December of 2010, someone admitted her. They cared about her well being and treated her with love. Even though she had been neglected, she knew that this was how it should be, and responded with affection. The sweet galga was examined by the Vet, had her shots, was spayed and microchipped, and was given her name, "Bless" which was one of many names generated out of a database but none-the-less suited her perfectly.  Her photos, name and profile were entered into the Scooby adoption database by another person who cared, and Bless just took a giant step into the hearts of people worldwide who care about and love galgos.

Bless' Scooby Adoption Photos - How We Selected Her
She was then moved to a paddock.  It was so nice to be in a place with shelter, an open field to run free, regular meals and visits and attention from even more people who cared, the Scooby staff and volunteers. So many kind people visited her paddock, giving her love and attention. She yearned to go with each and every one of them, but she had to wait for something wonderful to happen... so she was very patient.

Meanwhile, in the USA, in August 2010, the Easter family lost their dearest greyhound, Daisy, to Osteosarcoma. It broke their hearts... :-(
Daisy, Our Beloved First Greyhound
They had adopted another greyhound rescue, Wilma, who was a delight, and also had another dog, a rescued American Eskimo, Jake. Even with these two lovelies and a sweet cat, named Frank, they still had room in their hearts and home for another pet.
Wilma, Our Second Greyhound - Silly Girl
Jake, Our American Eskimo - Angel
Margie had read an article about Spanish galgos in, "Celebrating Greyhounds" a few years prior -- about how difficult their lives are and how they are not respected or treated well. It saddened her. She decided that one day, she'd like to adopt a beautiful galgo.  She researched on the Internet for months and contacted people until she found Eva and Diane, who represented the Scooby Medina del Campo galgo rescue group. She contacted them by email first, and then by phone. She looked through the photos and found that very special, beautiful galga who was waiting for her... "Bless". But she was sad to learn that Bless was going to France. :-(  Her heart was set on that galga.  Okay, so she selected another, "Dorothy", who eventually ended up in Italy. Margie inquired again and learned that Bless was still at Scooby, so Eva held her for the Easters to adopt. A few days later, when she spoke with Eva, she suggested that Margie might want to travel to Scooby Medina to volunteer and to pick up her galga. At first, it seemed outrageous, and then it occurred to her that it would be a wonderful adventure. (She had no idea how great it would be!)

Margie traveled to Spain in April 2011 to volunteer at Scooby with Diane and Lydia, Scooby USA board members, met many wonderful people from the UK and Netherlands, who are mentioned throughout this blog and mainly, to bring back the most beautiful and special galga with the gorgeous Spanish eyes and beautiful brindle markings -- our Bless.

One person cared, and then another, and another, and it continues on and on... As a result, Bless has the wonderful life she deserves as a pampered pet in the Easter home.

It's been over a year now since we brought back our Bless, and I cannot tell you how much joy that she brings to our lives.  She is a wonderful, loving, sweet, affectionate pet, and we love her SO much!

Bless and the Easters truly have a Happily Ever After! :-)

Bless Has a 'Mini-Me' - Custom Original Sock Dog

My Custom Bless Original Sock Dog
How many lucky dogs have their own mini-me?  Well our Bless does!  A while ago, I was reading through my News stream on Facebook, and noticed the photos of some of the most amazing personalized works of art called, "Original Sock Dogs", which are lovingly designed and hand-crafted by Stacey Hsu. Just look at the attention to detail. Amazing!  I messaged Stacey in April, and she delivered my Bless Sock Dog to me in mid-May.  She takes the time to make sure that your dog is exactly what you want. She also has "Original Sock Dogs" that you can purchase/adopt. Even more, for every dog you purchase, 10% will be donated to the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, a no-kill shelter. You can read Stacey's story here:  http://www.sockdogs.com/our-story.html

Thank you, Stacey! We love our Bless Sock Dog and have a very special place to display her. I might mention that Bless would like to have her as a toy! ;-)

Visit to Spain, Spring 2012: Day Nine - Last Trip to Scooby Medina del Campo (on this visit) & Journey Back to the USA with Benji and Rayo

Rayo and Benji - Ready to Travel to the Big Apple, New York City
On Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, we went to bed at 7:00 p.m. and our alarm was set for 2:30 a.m.  Had a nice rest, and then the pre-Easter fireworks began. Luckily, they didn't last long and we could still drift off to sleep in spite of the hoopla. We only wished we could have been out celebrating with the Medina del Campo folks and our UK Scoobettes, but rest was our priority. It would be a long day tomorrow, traveling to the USA and bringing back Benji and Rayo.

Alarm went off at 2:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday. We were ready to go by 3 a.m. Checked out of the hotel and headed out to pick up the dogs for their journey to their new homes in the USA.  Drove to Scooby HQ, unlocked the gate, had leashes ready and retrieved Benji and Rayo. Of course, we roused the chorus of other Scooby dogs, and felt bad that we had disturbed their sleep. We put coats on both of them so they would stay warm. Grabbed the frozen water dishes, locked the gate and off we went.  Rayo rode peacefully in the back of the van with the dog carriers and Benji rode in the back seat.  Benji was very excited and inquisitive and made several attempts to be the driver and/or passenger in the front seat along the way. ;-)
Scooby Lovebugs Arrive at Madrid Airport
Beware Regarding Returning Rental Cars at the Madrid Airport
Thank God we decided to leave so early! The drive to Madrid was a breeze, but once we got to the airport, it was *so extremely* confusing. We burned up an extra 90 minutes with this drama... Thankfully, our Delta flight did not leave until 10:30 a.m.

[gripe warning]
We knew that we needed to get to A1-A4 Terminals, but the airport is so spread out and the signage is not so good, so we ended up getting lost and then finding our way, but still circling the airport terminals several times.  Our dilemma was that we could not find the entrance to the Avis rental car lot to return the car. We stopped three times and got three different sets of directions for returning the car.

Needless to say, this was the biggest calamity of our trip.  We were so frustrated, and the dogs so wanted out of the van. It was intense for all... Finally, we drove into the short-term parking lot next to the Avis parking lot. Stopped on the other side of the small barrier posts that separated one lot from the other, ran to the booth and asked once more for help. There was another customer in the Avis booth trying to figure this out. He was from Australia and was even more frustrated than we were.  We asked if the agent could just ride one minute with us to help us find our way (answer was, "No!"), or if we could just leave the van where it was so that we could take the dogs and get checked in. Two stories: the rep in the booth said it would be 17E to leave the car, the rep in the terminal said it would be 26E.  Huh?

We were so extremely frustrated, tired and at wits end, so decided to leave the van there for their retrieval with the rep at the booth.  Outcome on our bill one month later. OUCH! -- All said and done, they charged us for "damages" of $197 USD, which is not only outrageous, but which I am also disputing. Very unsatisfactory customer support when you call with an issue.  Friends, I will be not be booking with Avis in the future, unless there is a dire reason to do so. If they resolve this issue in a satisfactory way, I shall let you know. Otherwise, they are on my "do not use" list. Biggest lessons learned: 1) Make sure that you get really good directions for returning your rental car at the Madrid airport. 2) Take photos of the vehicle when you get it and return it so that you have proof that there are no damages. The van we had was brand new, and we had no damages, so why the extra charges? We shall see...
[gripe over]

Sorry for the rant - but it was extremely disconcerting because our entire trip was such a delight otherwise! Now back to the story... :-)
Darrell with Rayo and Benji at the Madrid Airport
We brought the dogs, carriers and bags into the airport and checked in. Had about an hour to walk the dogs around. Let them relieve themselves outside and relax a bit. Many people stopped by to pet them and asked about them.  Folks were excited to know that they were traveling to their homes in the USA.  The Delta reps were awesome!  They gave us extra special attention and took us to the front of all of the lines to make sure that we had time to put the carriers together, load up the dogs and then get to our gate on time.  We made it to our gate just as they began boarding.  We had middle aisle seats, but had paid for extra leg room, so it was a good trip to NYC. Another nice touch -- they now give you a boarding confirmation that your pets are on board the plane. We could rest now that the babies were on board and safe.
Angels On Their Way to the USA
Once we arrived in NYC, we went through Immigration, retrieved our bags, and then waited for the dogs to go through Customs. They brought each dog separately, and both traveled like the rock stars that Scooby dogs are -- calmly and patiently.  We contacted Barbara, once we landed, to let she and Debra (adoption parents) know which terminal and gate we would be arriving at.  We paraded the dogs through Customs, and then out through the gate. We met Barbara and her husband, and Debra and her friend to hand off the dogs. Only had a few minutes to get to our next flight to SFO. Took a couple of photos, gave hugs, kisses to Benji and Rayo and then off we went.
Barbara and Her Husband Take Benji for Placement in his New Home - Thank you!

Debra Meets Rayo and He Goes to His Forever Home - Thank you!
Busy weekend for travel -- Spring Break for many. We rechecked our bags and then went through security and then to our gate. Had enough time to get a slice of New York pizza - yummy!  Boarded the plane and relaxed. Sat next to a nice young man who was a college student and Internet entrepreneur. Had a nice discussion about Trance and Techno music, which I love. Fell asleep from NYC to SFO with a big smile on my face, knowing that we had brought yet two more Scooby dogs to loving homes.;-)

Sorry for my much delayed posting.  But I think that I've procrastanated because I don't want it to end... ever...

Darrell and I plan to return to Scooby next year to do more work and bring back more dogs.

You see, it's obvious...
we have Scooby Fever, for which there is no cure, except to return again and again to experience the animals, the place, the people, the everything...  I miss it already and cannot wait to return!

Happy Birthday to Bless!

We Interrupt this Blog to Wish Bless a Very Happy 5th Birthday!

We don't actually know Bless' birthday or age, but we are celebrating on her one-year anniversary of coming to her forever home in California from Spain. We love you *so* much Blessings! :-) Here's a short version of her story.

Visit to Spain, Spring 2012: Day Eight - Scooby Medina del Campo

Darrell - Last Day at Scooby
Hola, Amigos and Amigas,
It is with heavy hearts that we spend our last full day at Scooby. The time flew by all too quickly, and we enjoyed every minute to the fullest. It was another rainy, cold day, which somehow makes it all more memorable; as these types of days seem to get ingrained in our memories.
Bless' Brother?
This beautiful brindle, long-haired Galgo was in the same Quarantine pen that Bless was in last year.
He was so shy and timid. He wanted to come up to be petted, but never made it to my hands. So sad to see how timid some are. One only knows what he's seen and experienced.
On this last day, we cleaned a few pens and made some dog food. But our main focus was on making certain that everything was ready for taking Benji and Rayo home to the USA.  We put their water bowls in the freezer in the Scooby kitchen. Darrell loaded their carriers into the van. We picked out a couple of cute donated coats and blankets for them. Helen, our wonderful colleague, brought several gorgeous collars for the Scooby dogs, and offered two of them to us for Benji and Rayo. The two handsome Scooby dogs would arrive in New York City in style, thanks to Helen! :-)
Rayo - Sweet Long haired Galgo. Came home to the USA (New York) with us!
Benji - Padenco mix. Lively and loving. Also came home to the USA (New York) with us.
We had a late lunch at the wonderful cafe across the street from the hotel, near the church, and then went back to Scooby to say our goodbye's to the volunteers, staff and dogs.  Turned in early, around 7 p.m. Our alarm was set for 2:30 a.m.  Blah!

Wouldn't you know it... the weather was improving, so they had fireworks that Saturday evening before Easter Sunday, which woke us up a couple of times. We wished we could have been able to enjoy the festivities with the others, but needed our rest for the long journey home to California. In spite of all of the emotion and hoopla, we slept well on this, our last evening in Spain.

We All Feel Like We Own Scooby -- Or Rather, Scooby Owns Us and Our Hearts...
It had been almost exactly one year since I had visited Scooby to volunteer and pick up Bless, and I still remember every detail as though it was just yesterday. What is it about this place that burns such passionate feelings into our minds and hearts? The sights, sounds and smells of Scooby are unforgettable (some good, some not-so-good ;-) ). Why do all of us who visit take such an ownership over what happens to Scooby and the animals there, and even those who have never visited?  I think it is the passion that we feel for the dogs, and the good that is being done there. There are so few places where there is great need, and where we can see the difference that we can make right away, by sponsoring or volunteering. Scooby has such an incredibly strong, dedicated and supportive team of global volunteers, who take so much ownership for the success of this wonderful place. It's truly touching and inspirational.  When we visit Scooby, it becomes even more of a part of us. We get to know the dogs. We get to see what it's really like there. We get to see the difference that we all are making, and it just takes hold of us.  Aside from that, since my visit last year, I ran into many of the same great staff and volunteers at Scooby, including my mates from the UK, and even staff at the airport, which helped make me feel at home again.

For those who have never visited Scooby, or those who have one time or one hundred times, here's to you!  A tour of Scooby - welcome home and please come back again - we know you have the sweetest dreams about this place. We sure do! :-)
